When I started out in Germany 7 years ago with a marathon blog, it was difficult to get external links. Germans were stingy when it came to linking to another website. The rules of the game were different back then. An external link could take away the strength of an internal link, so it was not very attractive from an SEO point of view to be too generous with it.

Importance of external and internal links

Things have changed a lot since then. A link is not only important for search engine positioning. Here are 12 key factors when it comes to putting a link in a post.

A link improves the quality of the content

An external link serves to generate added value for your journalist email list readers. Adding links related to a topic can be very valuable when it comes to providing an overview of a topic.

1. Show that you know your field : When you put quality external links, you show that you know the subject and the relevant authors in your field. You are probably not the only one writing about the topics you cover.

2. It serves to detail additional aspects of the post : sooner or later you have to get to the end of your post. Although there are always interesting aspects to detail, you should not try to cover all the aspects in the same post. External (or internal) links can serve to fulfill that role.

The link is an element of the visual aspect of a post

Few people take into account the visual aspects of a link. You have to prevent the user from leaving the blog. We have less than 1 second to get their attention.

3. Anchor for the user : blogs are no longer read, they are scanned . A link stands out from the rest of the text. Well positioned, it helps to keep the user's attention a little longer.

4. Avoid having 2 links overlapping : details are important. Two overlapping links give the impression of disorder. I don't always succeed in doing this, and it should also be avoided so as not to lose the anchor function.
