The concept of LIM (or Landscape Information Modeling) is to use information technology to speed up decision making in landscape architecture. LIM is also intended to add a new dimension to design processes.
The overall goal of the concept is to develop a BIM-based plugin or software that will allow for usa email list the analysis of the environmental impact of landscape projects, optimize their costs and minimize resource use.
The main LIM indicators are formulated in four points:
Climate control
Calculation of the surface shaded by trees
Soil temperature modeling
Water management
Flood risk analysis
Water balance modeling
Greenery management
Monitoring of "green" zones
Possibility of calculating environmental pollution
Monitoring "sustainability"
Visualization of the economic aspect
Exchange of information about objects
An example of a project that has used the LIM concept is the development of the Milano Innovation District (MIND), the area that hosted the Expo in 2015. Initiated in 2017, the project involved the improvement of a large multifunctional theme park consisting of an extensive network of pedestrian and bicycle paths, green islands, water features, new public functions and an innovative mobility concept.
As Nadezhda Morozova admitted, when working on the new concept, she and her colleagues faced a serious challenge: an information model of a territory of 100 hectares had to be created in one month. In addition to developing the model and dividing it into special zones and blocks, the project also required creating libraries of the main conceptual solutions and conducting a preliminary assessment of the project cost. A very important aspect was the use of software within the LIM concept with a focus on the maximum possible automation and acceleration of the modeling process with minimal requirements for the level of detail of elements.
Laser scanning data and the Revit program were used to develop the territory model. This choice was due to the ease of finding specialists with professional skills in working with this program. The initial data was presented in DWG format, and the contractors also provided information models for the Expo 2015 project.
The territory modeling included the placement of trees, paths and platforms made of different types of materials. The resulting CIM was used to evaluate the indicators within the LIM concept. For example, an analysis of the effectiveness of investments in a greening project of such a large territory was conducted, taking into account the positive impact of trees and shrubs on the urban environment and the cost of their maintenance.
Conclusion
At the end of her speech, Nadezhda Morozova cited another project implemented in Italy as an example: the creation of an information model of a park in the city of Taranto, whose residents suffer from environmental pollution due to the activities of a metallurgical plant.
Work on the project began in 2018 with the creation of element libraries: a lot of time was spent especially on classifying thousands of trees and shrubs of various species. The development of the information model itself, according to the expert, took a couple of weeks.
