Political parties represent a fundamental pillar in the construction of global societies. This is because since the beginning of civilizations, although unlike current models, political groups have already played an important role in uniting groups to defend common interests. This phenomenon can be observed even in more remote periods, when Greece and Rome, for example, already had groups of followers of a doctrine or even an idea.


The evolution of this model meant that the political party, as it is currently constituted, gained even more space and notoriety, becoming an important instrument for the organization and establishment of representative democracy.

The history of political parties

Initially, the democratization of public power gave space only to the participation of economic and social elites. In other words, in their early days, only a restricted portion of the upper classes had political rights.


As a result, these groups operated under the leadership of influential aristocrats or bourgeoisie from high society who, based on their purchasing and social power, were responsible for presenting candidates for elected positions. Due to the characteristics of these groups, this type of party also became known as the “party of notables”, which operated, at that time, only during election periods.


With the development of societies and the expansion of political rights – which culminated in economic, political and social transformations caused by the modernization of civilizations –, the so-called mass parties emerged from a new perspective, whose organization was already different from the notable ones because they were no longer constituted in a temporary way or based on the elite, but rather with a clearer organizational structure, with defined employees and programs.
