The unusual One Pillar Pagoda was built in 1049 by Emperor Ly Thai Tong in gratitude to the Goddess of Mercy, Quan The Em Bo Tat. According to chronicles, Emperor Ly Thai Tong, who had no heirs, had a dream in which the Goddess, sitting on a lotus flower, hands him a newborn baby. Soon the emperor married a simple peasant girl, who gave him an heir. Considering the dream prophetic, the emperor ordered the Chua Mot Kot Pagoda to be built in honor of the goddess.
